Step 2 Product features and attributes Now that you've determined what kind of core you need, it's time to identify the features and attributes for that particular core.
Dimensional attributes It's very important to know the dimensions of the core you need. Core dimensions are expressed in terms of:
-
Length, expressed in inches or millimeters. Typically, core and tube length can be measured with a standard, certified tape measure. For lengths below five inches a standard tape measure does not have the accuracy required to measure increments of thousands of an inch.
-
Inside diameter, expressed in inches or millimeters.Tube or core inside diameter is always measured in thousands of an inch. A tape measure or line gauge is not sufficient to record the roundness and diameter of a core or tube.
Example: A three-inch nominal inside diameter is expressed as: 3.000", 3.010", 3.015", 3.025", etc. This exactness is critical in some winding and converting applications because the side of the spindle or mandrel that end users have differs between facilities, industries and markets.
-
Based on the end-user's mandrel or spindle size used in winding product onto tubes or cores.
-
Typically expressed in exact terms (to three decimal places) based on nominal diameter. (ex: A core with a three inch nominal diameter would have an inside diameter of 3.025 inches).
-
Wall thickness, expressed in inches or millimeters.Core or tube wall thickness can be measured with a standard certified tape measure but it is advisable, if wall thickness is a critical specification, that it is measured in thousands of an inch.
Special features Our tubes and cores can be customized to meet your needs. Choose from any of the following options:
-
Cutting and trimming
-
Printing and labeling
-
Special surfaces
-
Moisture resistant Let us coat your tubes with wax or other moisture-resistant options.
-
Friction control Using different paper combinations, we can engineer properties into cores that offer friction control and self-start adhesives.
-
Smooth surface The outside surface of the core can be made "seamless" to prevent spiral markings from imprinting on film, foils and pressure-sensitive materials.
-
End caps

-
Delivery Depending on the quantities, cores and tubes can be shipped via UPS, customer pick-up, standard common carrier or a carrier of your choice. Less-than-truck load (LTL) quantities are shipped FOB. our facility and truck-load quantities are shipped freight allowed.
-
Lead time Our lead time ranges from 24 hours to five days depending on the product type and special attributes.
